CYNTHIA KIMOLA - LAST FIVE PROGRAMME CRITIQUES ON WARIDI

These episodes are a follow up of the 1st five episodes I posted at the start of the semester on February 27th , 2010. So thats why it starts from Episode 6 -10. I have been watching and writing them down so that I can type and post them in the blog at once. It has been very exciting to critique Waridi as I have observed all the camera angles, shots and movements as we had learnt in class.

EPISODE 6

A long shot of the hang out joint (looks like the Kasarani Sports Centre to me) and it established where Karama are having lunch. They are both dressed casually creating a relaxed atmosphere. A Close up shot of Karama talking on the phone with his soon to be ex-wife to show anger, distress on his face. Andy’s mother, Lorna is secretly working on a campaign and the camera is kind of eavesdropping on her, we feel as though we know something the other characters don’t know. Mostly the zoom in, CU shot and the dollying camera movements are used. Tilting up and down is used sparingly and it is to show the sports centre as the scene fades out.

EPISODE 7

This particular episode is a follow up on the latter one and what was the focus is what the society experiences, corruption as we see Paul bribing a government official. Jealousy, suspicion as we see Linda suspicious of Lorna and the close relationship she has with her husband. This scene starts out with wide shot of Harry's house to establish the surrounding scene and a bed track is also heard and the scene fades us into the house where we see Harry and his wife Linda talking.

After a while we see them arguing and the camera uses the eye level angle and I feel as if Harry is arguing with me, then and over the shoulder shot is used as they continue to exchange words. The basis of their argument is on Lorna. Linda wants her fired.

Harry leaves the house and we are faded into his office and he is talking to Lorna his secretary. We dolly in on his wife Linda as she gets into the building and into Harry’s office to apologise only to find Lorna there. A close shot of the wife’s face is shown as we see the disgust on her face. A fast paced music is in this scene as the camera moves from the wife’s face, to Lorna and then to the Harry. This scene is full of tension and I could feel it.

EPISODE 8

It opens with a Low angle shot of Paul talking to Jane, the secretary, to show his superiority over her. An objective perspective or Eye level shot of Paul talking to the company auditor.

The camera pans from left to right as each one of them talks and that’s how he learns that the company is almost bankrupt and Sanga is in the process of convincing Paul to venture into drug peddling to save the company.Jane, Paul’s secretary, is scheming to separate Paul and his wife Waridi and even goes to an extent of deleting the emails she sends to him.

EPISODE 9

Andy’s mother, Lorna is secretly working on Harry’s P.R. campaign and the camera is kind of eavesdropping on her, we feel as though we know something the other characters don’t know. A point of view shot is used with Linda, Harry’s wife as she goes through the newspaper only to see the worst. The subjective angle is now used here as the camera zooms into the paper and we get to see what angers her. A fast paced bed track is used here and a CU is used to bring our attention to her face.

Thanks for the opportunity, and now am on my road to being a professional critique an not an amateuar. God bless you.

Cynthia, you've done well to highlight the different camera shots in this programme. However, what effect did the shots have on you as a viewer. Did they effectively tell the story?
