Programme critiques by Margaret Muthee

I have still been watching the same programme Tabasamu on Monday evenings. My experience has been better than the last time i posted the critique since we learnt camera movements in class.

In the recent episodes of the programme full shots have been used on characters especially when they are alone. A good example is a full shot on JB's new girlfriend Gabby when she walks into the bedroom and is up to no good. She destroys Shalima's photo, replacing it with her own. An extreme close up shot has been used on Gabby as she destroys the photo. I feel that a zoom in should also have been used to show her disgust towards the photo. The full shot here helps us to also know the surrounding...it's in a bedroom.

An establishing full shot has been used on a residence. It is Ruffina's mother's house. We are able to learn that she lives in a posh estate.

There's a cut to another scene where we see JB answering the door for Rita, Maya's cousin. A tilt down has been used to show Gabby's focus on the two from her bedroom upstairs. When Gabby walks down stairs a dolly has been used and then there's a three medium shot on all of them.
Left and right pans have been used as the three characters interact.

There's a cut to another scene...in a restaurant. Firstly, an establishing full shot has been used in this scene. An over the shoulder shot follows as Maya's secretary and a young man converse. left and right pans have been used as they speak.
A dolly has been used on the approaching waiter. When he gets to them, the camera tilts up to him.
I do not like the way the frame is set when the couple finally starts leaving. their heads are cut.

a zoom in has been used on Ruffina as she remembers her past. She also remembers how she caught the mum with a younger man in her house. I am still doing more critics and enjoying it more since we learnt camera movements!

Margy, you've done well to highlight the different camera shots in this programme. However, what effect did the shots have on you as a viewer. Did they effectively tell the story?
