My name is Georgina Kakuyu and I will be critiquing Straight Up a programme that is aired on weekdays from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. It is an entertainment show that targets the youth. It is hosted by Tero and interchangeably has two co-hosts Disk Jockeys (DJ); Dj Kaytrix and Dj Mr. T.

27th January 2010

The show begins with a medium shot (MS) of Tero as she introduces the show. Zooming in and out is used as we had learnt in class. The camera is zoomed in when Tero is giving the entertainment news and the viewer is able to concentrate on what is being said. Thereafter the camera is zoomed out to have a better view of her surroundings. (In my view this is also done to give viewers, in special regard to the female viewers, to have a good look at her outfit as she is seen by many as a fashion icon in Kenya). The background color scheme is bright and it reflects the mood of the show since it is a hype show.

3rd February 2010

A right to left panning is used as Tero introduces her co-host DJ Kaytrix in the beginning of the show. There was a feature of a Japanese hotel with an interior design of a house concept. There was a close up (CU) shot on the fine designs used. Dolly effect was used when one of the presenters was interviewing different people in event and would like the audience to follow him through. The visual editing was well done.

10th February 2010

DJ Mr. T. was using a turntable and it was interesting to see it in use after being taught on the same during class. In the interview section a secular musician, Nonini, was giving away his new album that had been recorded on a compact disk (CD). In some parts of the show, the audio quality was poor as one could hear shuffling paper sounds as the audience waited for the next song to begin. The camera shot was on shoulder level.

17th February 2010

Tero had a lavalier microphone attached to her clothes whereas DJ Kaytrix had a headset microphone. There was the paper shuffling noise which I think is because they were using unidirectional microphone which picks even the slightest of sounds in its pick up pattern range.there was use of zooming in and out as well as dolly.

24th February 2010

There was use of long shots (LS) numerously as Tero and DJ Mr. T conversed on their day’s happenings. At some point during the show there seemed to be a problem with the lighting as the light was brighter than usual. The visual editing was well executed. There was use of medium shots(MS) and close ups (CU).

It was an interesting experience and an educative one at that.tune in to the show every weekday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm.

Georgina, your critique is quite good with camera angles and movements but has not covered other aspects of broadcast techniques e.g sound. Keep updating it on a weekly basis. Try to relate what you view to what you learn both in class and assigned readings. Identify the disconnects and suggest better ways of making the programme better. Suppose, you were the producer of this programme what would you do differently?
